Kraft Healthy Lifestyles and Fitness for All Program
With childhood obesity on the rise, the Museum has entered into a partnership with Kraft Foods to teach the importance of healthy eating habits, nutrition, and physical fitness. Through the Kraft Healthy Lifestyles and Fitness for All Program, the Museum brings Kraft’s "Steps to Healthy Living" to young children through exhibit enhancements and programs including a new food pyramid in the Dominick's exhibit that is complemented by healthy food choices and shopping lists that encourage purchases for balanced meals.
You can put these principles into place at home by being active with your children. Experts say that what children want most is time with their parents. To give them that, don’t just send them out to play, go play with them!
A few ways to make physical fitness fun with your children.
- Simon Says is an excellent game for stretching and flexibility. Start simply and build up to longer or more repetitive commands.
For example: “Simon says, stand on your toes”; then, “Simon says, stand on your toes and count to five.” Or, “Simon says, jump up high”; then, “Simon says, jump up high five times.” - Follow the Leader can help you and your child get aerobic exercise, especially if you play outside. It really doesn’t matter whether you get creative with your actions; it’s more important to keep moving. For example, if it’s too difficult to climb over or under a fence, run around it. Or, if space is limited, do jumping jacks or run in place.
