Chagall for Children

On Exhibit: June 10-August 31, 2008

Kohl Children's Museum presents a multi-sensory, hands-on exploration of one of the best-known and best-loved artists of the twentieth century, Marc Chagall.

Chagall for Children is a world-class exhibit that showcases 15 multi-sensory exploration stations, each incorporating a high-quality reproduction of one of Marc Chagall's works.

Chagall for Children has interactive components which offer hands-on activities and an audio description of each work specifically geared for children ages 2-12.

Things to Do:
  • Explore the effect of light on stained glass by adjusting the light levels behind America Windows and recreating the piece by rearranging puzzle-like pieces of the work.

  • Be a part of At the Circus via a video camera and monitor; pose and play on the circus stage.
  • Compare art forms between a reproduction of The Birthday and the tactile experience of touching the bas relief or create a “rubbing” from the bas relief.
  • Create a three-dimensional house against the backdrop of The Blue House.
  • Select musical instruments represented in The Concert and blend sounds the way Chagall artistically blended colors.
  • Create a flower arrangement inspired by Flowers and experiment with floral scents.
  • Explore the art of narrative form by manipulating main figures and details of The Flying Sleigh to tell a different story.
  • Listen and choose music that best describes Green Violinist; or capture and alter the color of your face on a computer screen.
  • Learn about the concept of symmetry and explore the different ways people view the world by rotating I and the Village.
  • Explore the role of detail in The Juggler by using a touch screen to animate elements of the painting
  • Create a tapestry similar to Job Tapestry by weaving and sewing.
  • Experiment with composition using magnetized pieces to create a picture of Paris, similar to Paris Through the Window.
  • Experiment with brightly-colored, three dimensional, soft-sculpture animals to create fantasy creatures and scenes, similar to The Poultry Yard.
  • Touch and rearrange the beautiful feathers in the tail of a soft sculpture copy of The Rooster.
