Enjoy a book reading and signing with Velisse Ammons Williams, author of Candy-Colored Friends. Free with Museum admission.

Candy-Colored Friends is a remarkable story about celebrating differences and similarities. A must read for children who are reluctant to make friends with someone who might look differently than they do. It conveys a strong message that meaningful relationships are born from acceptance, but first we must learn to get past differences, particularly skin color, before discovering how similar we really are.

The book celebrates differences and similarities among children while focusing on diversity, acceptance, and self-esteem.

Velisse Ammons Williams hails from Joliet, Illinois. From early childhood, Velisse always expressed an interest in art and creative writing. Her love for illustrations lead her to create several personal collections of her own drawings which she carried into adulthood. Upon graduating from Eastern Illinois University, with a bachelors in Communications, Velisse entered the corporate world, working with two major fast food chains. It was not until seven years ago that Velisse took a hiatus from her corporate career to become a stay at home mom. Consequently, she resumed her passion for creative writing.

Now, a married mother of three, Velisse resides in Dallas, Texas where she is currently working on a follow-up series of her recently published work, Candy-Colored Friends. Her writings are inspired by her children in a pursuit to enlighten them about diversity, self-esteem and other relevant topics facing young people today.
